Gloucester Docks dredging update – Feb 1st 2024
The Canal & River Trust’s dredging programme at Gloucester Docks has continued at the start of 2024 with good progress being made ahead of the boating season and major events this summer.
Dredging has moved into the basin at the start of the year to help achieve depths of 3.5 metres.
There had been a delay during the freezing weather experienced in January, however following the return to warmer temperatures the dredging teams have been able to focus on the basin areas with plans for future dredging to also take place on North Quay and at the finger moorings.
An interim survey is due to take place in early February which will provide important insight into the success of the works and focus on any areas that require additional work.
In late February, backhoe (bucket) dredging will be taking place next to High Orchard Bridge to target an area of the canal where significant debris had caused issues with the pumps in December.
It’s still possible for boaters to continue to use the docks but are asked to pass through the area with care and to follow instructions from the dredging crew if necessary.
As a charity, the Canal & River Trust welcomes support that partners can give to the Trust’s work as part of the dredging programme. Despite ongoing financial challenges and the impacts of climate change, the Trust is continuing to work to maintain 2,000 miles of canal network across England and Wales.
